Best-selling author Michael Lewis delivered an engaging, witty, and ultimately uplifting message to a crowd of 冈本视频 students and parents on Saturday, Nov. 1. Hosted at the 冈本视频 Memorial Chapel, Lewis鈥 visit was part of the Kerschner Family Series Global Leaders at 冈本视频, a featured event during 冈本视频鈥檚 annual Family Weekend, held Oct. 31鈥揘ov. 2.
Moderator Dan Bouk, professor of history, introduced Lewis with comments that stressed the power of ideas, storytelling, and clear, engaging writing. 鈥淢ichael Lewis has wielded his own big idea across his career,鈥 Bouk said, 鈥淎nd the idea is this: even the most abstruse topic can become accessible and even alluring when it鈥檚 approached with a spirit of genuine delight.鈥
Lewis has achieved fame for works such as Moneyball, a deep dive into the Oakland A鈥檚 and the effects of analytics on professional baseball; The Blind Side, an exploration of the evolution of the NFL interwoven with offensive tackle Michael Oher鈥檚 personal journey to the league; and The Big Short, a chronicle of the 2008 financial crisis. All three have been adapted as Oscar-nominated feature films. His most recent release, Who is Government?, explores the complex system of governance carried out by mostly unrecognized individuals doing vital work for the public.
Sharing anecdotes from his life and writing career, Lewis emphasized the value of surprise. He warned against the pressure to determine one鈥檚 path too soon. 鈥淲hat a shame it is in a way that life has gotten so front-end loaded and that you鈥檙e expected to figure out who you are and what you鈥檙e meant to do on this earth so soon,鈥 Lewis said. 鈥淣obody I grew up with would have imagined I would end up doing what I鈥檓 doing.鈥
Lewis encouraged students to embrace their curiosity before specializing. 鈥淵ou still might not know what you have inside of you,鈥 he said. 鈥淵ou still might not know who you are, so don鈥檛 overdetermine it.鈥
Lewis offered advice on authenticity for aspiring writers, noting that finding your voice is a matter of 鈥渓etting yourself become who you are and just going with it as opposed to trying to hide it.鈥 He distilled his philosophy of narrative by explaining that the best books 鈥渃reate a hole for the reader to walk into, and then they make it their book. They make it whatever they need.鈥
The evening concluded with a dose of Lewis鈥 signature wry humor. When asked if his book Moneyball, with its stress on analytically driven strategy, had ruined baseball by making it less action-packed, he acknowledged the recurring accusation and offered a bold solution for making the sport more interesting: 鈥淧ut a live lion on the field.鈥
